Saint Patrick’s Day known colloquially as St. Paddy’s Day, or simply Paddy’s Day, is an annual feast day that celebrates Saint Patrick (circa AD 385–461), the most commonly recognized of the patron saints of Ireland, and is generally celebrated on March 17th.
In the past, Saint Patrick’s Day was celebrated as a religious holiday. It started as a simple feast day to honor St. Patrick but developed into a holy day of obligation where people attended mass in the morning and celebrate for the rest of the day in the afternoon. During the Middle Ages, shops would close for the whole day as the celebration became longer and more enthusiastic. It was also during this time that St. Patrick’s Day became a one-day reprieve from the forty days of fasting during the season of Lent. Lenten prohibitions against the consumption of meat were waived and people would dance, drink and feast—on the traditional meal of Irish bacon and cabbage. Other indulgences included imbibing ale, a beer brewed from malted barley. Over the years drinking ale and other beer products became a tradition for the day.
Originally the color associated with St. Patrick was not green but, in fact, blue. However over the years the color green and its association with St. Patrick’s day grew. Green ribbons and shamrocks were worn in celebration of St Patrick’s Day as early as the 17th century. He is said to have used the shamrock, a three-leaved plant, to explain the Holy Trinity to the pre-Christian Irish, and the wearing and display of shamrocks and shamrock-inspired designs have become a ubiquitous feature of the day. Then in 1798 in hopes of making a political statement Irish soldiers wore full green uniforms on March 17th in hopes of catching attention with their unusual fashion gimmick. The phrase “the wearing of the green”, meaning to wear a shamrock on one’s clothing, derives from the song of the same name.
St. Patrick’s feast day was placed on the universal liturgical calendar in the Catholic Church due in the early part of the 17th century, although the feast day was celebrated in the local Irish church from a much earlier date. St. Patrick’s Day is a holy day of obligation for Roman Catholics in Ireland. The feast day usually falls during Lent. The church calendar avoids the observance of saints’ feasts during certain solemnities, moving the saint’s day to a time outside those periods. St. Patrick’s Day is very occasionally affected by this requirement. Thus when 17th of March falls during Holy Week, as in 1940 when St. Patrick’s Day was observed on 3 April in order to avoid it coinciding with Palm Sunday, and again in 2008, having been observed on 15 March. St. Patrick’s Day will not fall within Holy Week again until 2160 – when it will fall on the Monday before Easter.
St. Patrick’s Day may fall on March 17, but most of us will be on Spring Break during that time. Therefore, CGU’s Graduate Student Council (GSC), the Drucker School Student Association (DSSA) and Keck Graduate Institute (KGI) are co-sponsoring an early St. Patrick’s Day party! Here are details:

The Drucker School Student Association (DSSA) is pleased to announce that Anugrah Singh is the president-elect of the student body organization for the 2010 – 2011 term.
The election capped off an exciting race between MBA students Singh and runner-up Gina Kwong. Kwong has stepped-up to serve as a one of two Graduate Student Council representatives joining incoming GSC representative Nedda Kavoossi for the upcoming term.
The election results are as follows:
• 148 students voted in the election
• 57% of votes were cast for Singh (85 votes)
• 43% of votes were cast for Kwong (63 votes)
In addition to the president-elect, there is a slate of new officers for next year’s DSSA (all of whom were uncontested in the election):
• Vice President of Operations: Ralitsa Kiskinova
• Vice President of Communications: Liyin Liang
• Treasurer: Kosuke Inoue
• Events Director: Kartik Swaminathan
A transition process will be set up and the new DSSA team will be up-and-running by late March after Spring break.
The outgoing team offers its warmest congratulations to everyone on the newly elected DSSA!
DSSA has received quite a bit of feedback from a few MBA students and several EMP students that voting times for DSSA elections are not accessible for the entire Drucker student community.
Given this, the DSSA executive committee has discussed the issue and has decided to approve voting by e-mail for students who cannot physically get to DSSA elections during the scheduled times this week on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 3:30 to 7:30 p.m.
In order to vote by e-mail, you MUST:
1) E-mail your vote FROM your CGU e-mail address ONLY (no exceptions)
2) E-mail your vote TO dssa@cgu.edu
3) Indicate your vote for only ONE presidential candidate:
Anugrah Singh or Gina Kwong
4) Include your FULL NAME and CGU STUDENT ID number in your e-mail message
Each student will be allowed only ONE vote. There is a master checklist of all votes for auditing purposes. If a student is found to have voted twice, that vote(s) will be discarded.
Your e-mailed votes will be kept in strict confidence.
Your e-mailed votes MUST be received by Thursday, March 4 at 7:30 p.m. when the voting table closes at Burkle. Votes e-mailed after this deadline will NOT be counted.
We hope this solves student concerns about accessibility to the DSSA election.
If you have questions, please contact us DSSA at dssa@cgu.edu
Voting continues Wednesday, March 3 and Thursday, March 4, in the lower lobby of the Burkle Building, from 3:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. If you were unable to make it to the speeches of DSSA presidential candidates, Gina Kwong and Anugrah Singh, don’t fret. We understand that many amongst us work full-time, don’t wake up before 2 p.m. in the afternoon, are busy taking care of kids, or are on the lookout for internships. We’re all busy people.
Whatever the reason you weren’t able to be there, the following videos are almost as good as being in the room when each candidate took their soap box. Watch Gina dazzle us with her views, and Anugrah amaze us with his opinions! (Get ready for a thrill ride with some popcorn as each video is roughly 10 minutes in length. Enjoy!)

A few dozen Drucker School students gathered on Thursday, February 25 in the Burkle Building Coutryard to hear the latest announcements from the Drucker School administration.
The new Drucker management team talked with students about the recent transitions of Dean Ira Jackson and of Christina Wassenaar. “This is an exciting time for Drucker,” said newly appointed Academic Dean Hideki Yamawaki. The new team is comprised of:
Prof. Hideki Yamawaki, Academic Dean
Leslie Negritto, Administrative Dean
Prof. Jenny Darroch, MBA Program Director
Prof. Jay Prag, EMP Program Director
For students who were not in attendance, the team welcomes your input and questions:
A team of four MBA students from The Drucker School won fourth place at this year’s Ninth Annual Leeds Net Impact Case Competition in Boulder, Colorado. Julia Baumgaertner, Sarah Dale Schwald, Jay Hinton, and Joshua Schare (pictured, right) were selected as one of 20 semifinal teams from more than 80 entrants. During the competition, they made it to the final round and finished fourth place. This year’s case revolved around the Colorado division of Xcel Energy, and the Drucker Team provided a creative solution to energy storage attached to wind-generated power.
