The Drucker School has just been chosen by Walmart to compete, along with 42 other leading business schools, in the Walmart Better Living Business Plan Challenge 2009.  Drucker will host an intra-school competition in January and the top team will go to a regional final at the Marshall School (USC) in February.  The winners of the eight regional finals will advance to the semis and finals at Walmart’s headquarters in Bentonville, Arkansas in April and compete in front of a panel of Walmart executives as judges (travel paid for by the sponsor).  The winning school gets $20K to invest in starting the project!

Specific details on this competition are coming early next week.  No word yet on whether we can get faculty advisors to help or if we can get area angel investors/VC’s to help judge and critique the business plans. Also, no word on whether FE’s and EMP’s or KGI can also compete.  In the meantime, all relevant information can be found here:

Help put the Drucker School on the map,  differentiate yourself from the crowd in a tough job market and get experience writing a business plan!

Feel free to state your interest and begin community dialogue in the comments section.  It will likely be teams of 3-4 members.  You don’t have to be a Net Impact member to compete.  Viva la Drucker revolucion!

Mark Albion fills Burkle 14

October 23, 2008 · 1 Comment

Net Impact welcomed NY Times best-selling author Mark Albion to the school on Oct. 21.  Burkle 14 was filled with a mix of MBA, MSFE, and SBOS students.  Mark reunited with Dean Jackson and Professor Sathe, old colleagues from his Harvard days, before leading the crowd through a spirited 75-minute presentation and discussion.

Mark’s message was that every one of us lucky enough to be at the Drucker School has a winning lottery ticket.  In other words, short of our own self-destruction, none of us will end up in the gutter.  We will all make a decent living.  The question Mark asked, is “how will you make a life (or what will you be remembered for)?”

When asked once what he wanted to be remembered for, Peter Drucker humbly replied, “That I helped a few people achieve their goals.”  I imagine Mark too, would answer something along those lines.  He always welcomes student feedback and questions at mailto:drmark@makingalife.com.  Check out a 3-minute clip:

Timberland’s new Bottom-line

September 21, 2008 · Comments Off

An interesting video from Timberland’s Senior Director of Values Marketing, Jay Steere. An interesting and new position in the corporation, but one with increasing importance.

A few key points that Jay makes:

1. There is a new bottom line out there in business, “The bottom line now takes into account, how does that company function within the community?”

2. The company must be a facilitator for the employees to go out and volunteer, work beyond the walls of the company.

Drucker School Profiled in 2008 edition of Net Impact’s annual “Business as Unusual”

September 18, 2008 · Comments Off

The 2008 edition of Net Impact’s annual “Business as Unusual” guide to MBA programs is now available.  It was picked up by U.S. News and World Report this year. The Drucker School is in the company, and ahead, of some of the best Graduate Business programs in the world.

Check it out here:

http://www.netimpact.org/displaycommon.cfm?an=1&subarticlenbr=2288

Drucker is profiled in section 3:13. Perhaps a quote that best sums up the Drucker School education is:

“The Drucker School of Management is one of the few business schools in the world that is named after a prolific thinker, not just a business leader. Consequently, it places a strong emphasis on a values-based education. Consistent with the teachings and writings of Peter Drucker, the Father of Modern Management, the school treats management as a liberal art. In every MBA class, students are taught to evaluate every stakeholder of society, not just the shareholder. The Drucker School’s core competency is training its students in the art and science of becoming effective managers and ethical leaders.”

We couldn’t have said it any better and it is for those reasons that we’re here!
